Your First Period: It's Not That Scary, Really!

I remember when I had my first period and noticed the blood stain on my white sheets when I woke up one morning. I was so terrified. Now I know you’re probably wondering why I was so scared. Honestly, I really don’t know. I went to the assembly at school where they played that same old video they play at everyone’s school about what happens to you during puberty, and give you those embarrassing bags stuffed full of those super-thick maxi-pads and deodorant coupons, and my mom even had a talk with me about it, but I was still scared. Puberty wasn’t talked about often and you really couldn’t trust your friends to give you accurate information, because they didn’t know what was going on either. So when it happened to me, I really didn’t know what to do, or what it meant.

Did it mean I was a woman now? And that I was supposed to date boys? I really was clueless. So when my mother came through the bathroom door asking me what I was doing, through my teary eyes I replied, “I think I’m on my period.” And once I told her, she gave me a box of pads and it really wasn’t as embarrassing and scary as I thought it would be. I found that all having a period meant was that I was getting older, and in the process of becoming a young woman.
